Roy L. Winters, 81, of 345 Parkview Drive, Keyser, formerly of Barton, MD, passed away Thursday March 8, 2012 at his residence.

Born April 12, 1930 in Barton, he was the son of the late Henry T. and Elsie F. (Broadwater) Winters.  His first wife in 1998, Elsie M. (Wilson) Winters, four sisters, Mary MacDonald, Virginia Metts, Ruby Gattens, and Ruth Lancaster, and two brothers, Marvin Winters and Marshall “Chub” Winters, also preceded him in death.

Mr. Winters was United States Army Veteran, having served during the Korean War.  He was a Staff Sergeant with 40th Infantry Division, having been awarded three Bronze Stars, the Combat Infantry’s Badge, the Korean Service Ribbon, the United Nations Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal.  He was previously employed at Coney Cleaners, Lonaconing, MD, the Piedmont Foundry, Luke, MD, the Celanese Corp, Cumberland, MD., and eventually retired from the Town of Barton, MD.  Mr. Winters was a member of Barton United Methodist Church, a member of Georges Creek Valley Lodge #161 A.F. & A.M., a member of Barton American Legion Post #189, a member of James P. Dickel Chapter of Korean War Veterans Association, Past Commander of the former Alvin C. Neat Post #5280 V.F.W., a member of Dogwood Flat Hunting and Fishing Club, and a member of the Barton and Lonaconing Senior Citizens.

He leaves behind his wife, Twila Maxine (Secrist) Winters, a sister, Wilma Williams and husband Dr. Neil of Westernport, MD, two step sons, Robert Winkler JR of Boothwyn, PA, Lee Winkler of Cumberland, MD, two step daughters, Patty Winkler of New Creek, Rhonda Malloy of Williamsport, MD, eleven step grandchildren, two step great grandchildren, and a special nephew, “Shorty” Racey of Barton, MD.

Friends will be received at the Boal Memorial Chapel, Barton, MD, on Sunday March 11th from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM.  The Barton American Legion will hold a memorial service at the Boal Chapel on Sunday at 7:15 PM, and the Georges Creek Valley Lodge #161 A.F. & A.M. will hold a memorial service on Sunday at 7:30 PM.

A funeral service will be conducted at Barton United Methodist Church, Barton, MD, on Monday March 12th at 1:00 PM, with Pastor Sandy Cowan officiating.

Interment will be at Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Rocky Gap, with military honors accorded by Post 13 Veteran Honor Guard.
