Richard Sutherland Gary FSA Scot, 76, of 2023 Savage River Road, Swanton, passed away Friday December 9, 2011 at Western Maryland Regional Medical Center, Cumberland.
Born November 23, 1935 in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Samuel Thomas Gary and the late Margaret Loretta (Sutherland) Gary. Four brothers, Thomas Lee Gary, Robert Gary, Edwin Thomas Gary and Donald Gary, and one sister, Shirley Dove, also preceded him in death.
Mr. Gary was a member of the 101st Airborne Detachment 508 during the Korean War. He was an author of Celtic Poetry. Mr. Gary was an avid historian of the Civil War and Scottish history. He was a life member of the St. Andrews Society of Baltimore, the Clan Stewart Society of America, registered member of the American Legion and the Scottish Tartans Society. In addition, Mr. Gary was a co-founder of the 71st Frazier Highlanders Reenactment Regiment of Maryland, and the Reverend of the Universal Life Church.
He leaves behind three brothers, Charles Gary and wife Phyllis, of Delaware, Allen Gary and wife Betty of Pasadena, Patrick Gary and wife Kimberly of Savage River, with whom Richard lived, three sisters, Sandra Feezle of Inwood, WV, Sharon Harrigan of Virginia, and Virginia Morris and husband Julian of Camden, SC, and their families.
At Richard’s request, he was cremated.
There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
