Mary Phyllis Marsh

Swanton, Maryland

Mary ‘Phyllis’ (Wilt) Marsh, 93, of Dry Run Road, Swanton, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, June 12, 2024.

Born on January 10, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Perry W. Wilt and Hattie Pearl (Gaster) Wilt. She was also preceded in death by her son, Jeremy W. Marsh; her husband, Eugene H. Marsh; and her sister, Ruth V. Wilt.

Phyllis was a graduate of Bruce High School in Westernport MD. She attended Frostburg State Teacher’s College and the University of Maryland, afterward, teaching at Luke School and Westernport Elementary. Phyllis was a member of the Westernport Church of the Brethren and was extremely active in the life of the church. She served in leadership roles on the church board and women’s fellowship at the local and district level. For over 30 years she functioned as moderator for the Bear Creek Church of the Brethren. At the national level she was involved with On Earth Peace and the early development of the People of the Covenant Bible Study. Her greatest passion was the work she did at West Marva District’s Camp Galilee in Terra Alta, WV. For over 60 years she supported the camping program in various ways, eventually serving as Camp Manager for more than 30 years. 

Phyllis is survived by her daughter, Wendy Browne, and husband, Dennis, of Swanton along with two grandsons, Andrew Browne and wife Abigail of Woodbridge, VA and Patrick Browne and girlfriend Alyssa Hopkins of Morgantown, WV. She is also survived by a beloved great granddaughter, Ella Browne.

Family and friends will be received at the Westernport Church of the Brethren on Saturday, August 17, 2024, at 12:00. A memorial service will follow the visitation at 1:00 with Pastor Diane May officiating. Afterward a dinner will be served in the fellowship hall.  

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Westernport Church of the Brethren General Fund.
