Barton, MD
Mary Gattens, 83, formerly of Barton, and more recently of The Kensington, Cumberland, passed away on November 26, 2013 at Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.
Born on December 31, 1929 in Westernport, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Jane Rose (Patrone) Gardine. She was also preceded in death by her husband James S. Gattens, brothers Francis “Sket” Gardine, George Gardine and two infant brothers, James and Joseph Gardine.
Mary was the owner and a cook at the former J & M Tavern Restaurant in Barton. She was also a devoted housewife, and she enjoyed going to Midland to play cards. She shared a special love of animals; she supported many animal rescues. Mary was Methodist by faith.
She leaves behind two sisters; Margaret Brinegar and husband Tom of Westernport and Sara Fazzalore and husband Sam of Keyser, WV; a special niece and caregiver, Janine Bradley of Cresaptown; and nieces and nephews, Melinda Youngblood, James Haggerty, Richard Brinegar, Anthony Fazzalore and Marla Fazzalore.
Friends and family will be received on Friday, November 29th at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport from 7 to 9 PM. A funeral service will be conducted after the visitation at 9:00 PM in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Sandy Cowan officiating.
Mrs. Gattens’s family would like to thank the ICU department at the hospital and the staff at The Kensington for all of their compassion and care.
