Joseph Albert “Bert” Rowan Jr, 88 of Lonaconing passed away on Sunday, February 21, 2016 at Egle Nursing and Rehab Center.
Born April 18, 1927, Bert was the son of the late Joseph “Abby” Rowan Sr and Myrtle (MeGee) Rowan.
Bert was preceded in death by the love of his life H. Colleen (Nolan) Rowan and two sisters Phyllis Llewelyn and Shirley Page.
Bert was Catholic by faith and a member of the St. Mary’s of the Annunciation, Lonaconing. Bert graduated from Central High School in 1945 and enlisted in the Army in July of 1945. He was honorably discharged in January 1947.
He was employed for over 37 years at Westvaco and retired in 1993. He was a 70 year member of the American Legion, Post 189, Barton. Lifetime member at the VFW, Lonaconing Republican Club and The Midland Sportsmen’s Club (The Patch).
Bert enjoyed spending his weekday afternoons with friends at the Barton Legion and The Midland Fire Hall. He also loved playing Set Back on the weekends, Saturdays at the Republican Club and Sundays at the Patch. Bert also enjoyed spending time on the “Island” at the Pavilion with Dan, Steve and Tom. He also enjoyed many evenings with his “roomies” Tim and Joe.
Bert is survived by his children, Tim and Carla Rowan of Frostburg, Mary Louise and Bruce Muir of Lonaconing and Joe and Sue Rowan of Lonaconing. Grandchildren Emmy and Jeremy Linaburg, Angela and Dan Bowers, Joseph Rowan IV, Vanessa and Aaron Walker, Shera and Tommy Chandler and Jared Rowan. Great grandchildren, Lydia and Nolan Linaburg. Devin and Ariana Bowers. Special nieces Cheryl Duncan, Mary Broadwater and nephew Pat Nolan and a cousin that he considered a sister, Norma Jean Keith of Alabama and also numerous nieces and nephews that he loved very much.
There will be no visitations at Bert’s request. There will be a mass of celebration of life at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church in Barton, Maryland on Friday, February 26, 2016 at 11:00 am. Friends and family will be received 1 hour prior to the service.
Interment will be in Frostburg Memorial Park, Frostburg.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and grandsons-in-law.
In lieu of flowers that donations can be made to George’s Creek Ambulance Service.
The family would also like to thank the staff at Egle Nursing and Rehab center for their loving care of Bert and allowing him to live out his days surrounded by love, respect and in dignity.
