Joseph Carl Davisson Sr., 85, of Lynn St, Westernport, passed away Sunday, July 19, 2015 at his residence.

Born May 16, 1930 in Westernport, he was the son of the late Carl C. and Alice Marie (Hammers) Davisson.  He was also preceded in death by a brother, Bernard “Beau” Davisson, and a sister, Catherine Lucille Harshbarger.

Joe was a 1949 graduate of Bruce High School.  He played on the basketball team and won the state class C title in 1949.  He also played sports for the Tri-Towns Leagues.  He helped build the Bruce High School concession stand in honor of his brother, “Beau”.  Joe spent 8 years with the United States Marine Corp Reserves and 4 years with United States Navy having served on the Gyatt, a destroyer during the Korean Conflict.  He worked for the B&O Railroad before eventually retiring from Westvaco Corp, with 37 years of service.  He enjoyed hunting and was a member of the Tucker Ridge Hunting Club, especially hunting with his grandson, Nathan.  Joe was an honorary member of the American Legion and served 10 years as Chaplin of the Victory Post #155 American Legion.  He was proud to be a veteran.  He was a volunteer fireman for many years, and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Piedmont, WV.  He played the trumpet for the former Blue Angel Drum Corp.  He was also a West Virginia University Fan.  He was a passionate fan of his great nephew, Michael Phelps.  One of the best times he had was going to Florida for baseball spring training with Woody Wilson.  He met the Atlanta Braves players and had a baseball signed by Bobby Cox.

He leaves behind his wife, Norma Lee (Pritts) Davisson, his children, Diana Lynn (Davisson) McDonald and husband John II and Joseph “Jody” Davisson II.  He loved his grandchildren who survive him, Nathan and wife Amanda and Sarah McDonald and a great granddaughter, Isabella Grace McDonald, and numerous nieces and nephews.  He also loved Diana’s dog Lizzie.

Friends and family will be received at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, on Wednesday, July 22nd from 5 to 9 PM.  A funeral service will be conducted at Trinity United Methodist Church, Piedmont, WV, on Thursday, July 23rd at 11:00 AM, with Rev. Steve Grimes officiating.

Interment will be in Philos Cemetery, Westernport, with military honors accorded at graveside.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Trinity United Methodist Church, Piedmont, WV.

The family would like to extend thanks to Western Maryland Health Systems Staff and the Western Maryland Hospice for the compassionate care given to Joe during his illness.
