Barton, MD
Frederick William Metz Jr., “JR”, died suddenly on July 4, 2012 in Barton and went to be in the hands of our Lord.
JR was born August 18, 1970 in Cumberland, the son of Frederick W. Metz Sr. of Lonaconing, and Betty (Martin) Stoffer of Frostburg.
He grew up on Savage River, where he still resided in his own “neck of the woods”. Growing up he was an avid baseball player, loved the Pittsburgh Pirates and “The Metz Baseball Team of 1911”, all who were his great-great uncles. JR was a 1988 graduate of Valley High School. He went on to work for Laborers Local 616 of Cumberland, MD, East Alcoa, Frederick, MD and EADS Survey Co. of Somerset, PA. His great past times were fishing, hunting, four wheeling in the mountains, hunting ginseng, photography, horseshoes and music. JR was a dedicated comrade and had many, many friends. He was a kind soul to everyone, would give his last dollar, a helping hand, had time for others needs, and loved animals, always having a dog as a companion, a squirrel on his window sill or a snake here or there. JR was a special uncle to Chris Apuzzo of Lonaconing. He always had to take him for a ride on the four wheeler, teach him the knack of boomerang throwing, casting a line in the back yard, taught him about fossils and how to throw a knuckle ball.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Frederick Mumford and Kathleen (Lashbaugh) Metz of Barton and maternal grandparents John and Dorothy (Murray) Martin of Frostburg.
JR is survived by his parents, Frederick W. Metz and wife Maude of Barton, his mother, Betty (Martin) Stoffer and husband Dave of Frostburg, MD and Punta Gorda, FL, two brothers, Jim Metz of Punta Gorda, FL, and Craig Layton of Frostburg.
Friends and family will be received at the Boal Memorial Chapel, Barton, on Monday, July 9th from 6 to 8 PM. A funeral service will be conducted at the Boal Chapel on Monday, July 9th following the visitation.
