Elizabeth Cooper Long “Betty Anne,” 86, of Lonaconing passed away on Sunday, June 2, 2013, in her home with her family.

Born May 26, 1927 in Lonaconing, MD, Betty Anne is preceded in death by her husband James N. Long, her daughter Kathy Sloan and her son-in-law Fred Sloan, and her sister Emma Louise Green.

Betty Anne is survived by her son Cooper Long and wife Recia, of Garner, NC. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Fred Sloan and wife Amanda, of Lonaconing, Molly Taylor and husband Tommy, of Lonaconing, Mac Sloan of Lonaconing, Cooper Long of Baltimore, and Matthew Long and wife Karen, of Guam; 8 great-grand children Alex Taylor, Nick Taylor, Johnny Taylor, Kate Taylor, and Abby Taylor of Lonaconing, Matthew Long and Sopia Long of Guam, and Caydence Pennington of Frostburg; cousin Dotty Olds, Easton, MD, and Margie Green, of Ferndale, MI.

Betty Anne was a graduate of Central High School, class of 1945. After high school she studied at Frostburg State College to become a teacher.  She began her dedicated career as a teacher in 1950 and taught at Cresaptown Elementary School, Central School, and Georges Creek Elementary School before retiring in 1984.  She was active in her community as a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church of Lonaconing, where she served on the St. Peter’s advisory board, taught Sunday School, and was a member of the Women of St. Peter’s.  She was also a dedicated member of the Central Alumni Committee in planning the annual reunion of Central High School graduates.

Betty Anne enjoyed spending time with her family, reading, baking, eating lunch with friends at Marshall’s Confectionary, and a night out at Kelly’s Bar.  She will be remembered for her love of the holidays and especially the 300 or more candy apples that were a tradition for Coney trick-or-treat.  She enjoyed good conversation with family and friends, far and near.  Her zest for life, love of others, and her sense of humor will be deeply missed.

Our Mom-mom has touched the lives of her family, friends, students, and colleagues through meaningful moments and experiences that will be treasured by all who knew her.  She was a strong and amazing mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, cousin, teacher, and friend. We are all blessed to be part of her glorious journey.

Friends will be received at the Boal Memorial Chapel in Barton, MD on Thursday, June 6, 2013 from 2 to 4 PM and 6 to 8 PM.  Funeral services will be conducted at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Lonaconing, MD on Friday, June 7, 2013 at 1:00 PM.  Mac Sloan, Fred Sloan, Matthew Long, and Cooper Long will serve as pallbearers.
