Edith M. (Taylor) Kerns, 92, of Maryland Avenue, Westernport, MD, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, April 25, 2015.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey P. Kerns, three brothers, Paul, David, and James Taylor, and a sister, Mary Jenkins.

Born, May 27, 1921, Edith was the daughter of the late William H. and Bessie E. (Custer) Taylor.  During the 1940’s, she worked at the Celanese Corporation in Cumberland, MD.   Edith was a lifelong member and past president of the Victory Post 155 American Legion Auxiliary and an active participant at the Westernport Senior Center.  She also served as a Cub Scout leader and as a volunteer at the elementary school with the PTA.  Edith’s passion was her gardening.   Most neighbors remember her for the lovely flowers that could be seen covering her front porch every spring and summer.  She also loved canning, making preserves and jellies, embroidery, and reading.

Surviving are her five children, Judith Blackburn of Westernport, MD, William Kerns and wife Chandra of Keyser, WV, Betty Sutherland of Rochester, NY, Debra Miller of Houston, TX, and Ronald Kerns and wife Sindi of Martinsburg, WV.  Also surviving is her sister, Ruth and husband Bob Woods of Oakland, MD, her 11 grandchildren, Raymond Lee and Jeffrey Blackburn, Joseph Sutherland, Monica Sutherland Huntoon, John Sutherland, Sarah Miller, Emily (Kerns) Hough, Andy Kerns, James Riggs, Eric Riggs, Karen (Riggs) Clark, and Jennifer Riggs-Olson and fifteen great-grandchildren.

Friends and family will be received at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport on Tuesday, April 28th from 6 to 8 PM.  A funeral service will be conducted at the Boal Funeral Home Chapel, Westernport, on Wednesday, April 29th at 1:00 PM, with Rev. Garrett Carskadon officiating.

Interment will be at the Philos Cemetery, Westernport, MD.

The family of Mrs. Kerns would like to thank the staff of Moran Manor Nursing Center for their compassionate care given to their mother while staying there.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Moran Manor Auxiliary in care of 119 Riordan Road, Westernport, or the Schwab Family Cancer Center, Cumberland.
