Lonaconing, MD
Dwight L. DeShong, 88, of W. Main St, Lonaconing, passed away Tuesday, January 1, 2013 at Western Maryland Regional Medical Center, Cumberland.
Born March 21, 1924, he was the son of the late Harry H. and Ethel (Sutton) DeShong. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Josephine Adeline (Westfall) DeShong, his brothers, Melvin, Harry “Junior”, and Dale DeShong, his sisters, Juanita Duckworth, Mildred Derham, and Twita Ross, and two great granddaughters, Jessica and Elizabeth Metz.
Mr. DeShong was a United States Army Veteran, having served from 1943 to 1946 in World War II in England and France. He was a retired coal miner, having worked deep mines from 1952 to 1969 and a surface miner from 1970 to 1979. He was a 49 year member of Barton American Legion #189, and a member of Queens Point V.F.W. #6775, McCoole.
He leaves behind his children, “Whitey” DeShong and wife Barbara of Barton, Terry DeShong and wife Linda of Lonaconing, Steve DeShong and wife Sue of Barton, JoAnn Robertson and husband Joe of Lonaconing, Janine Muir and husband Joe of Hurlock, and Carol Bittinger and husband Tim of Cumberland. He is also survived by fourteen grandchildren, Jennifer Metz and husband Dave, Dawn George and husband Jason, David DeShong and wife Heather, Jason DeShong and wife Christy, Erica DeShong, Tanner DeShong, Shawnna Llewellyn and husband Dan, Stephen DeShong, Tyler DeShong, Brittany Preston, Jacob Muir, Mackenzie Muir, Autumn Nicol, and Amber Nicol, and seven great grandchildren, Derek Kaitlin, Brenan, Aubri, Cohen, Tynsley, and Brantley, and special nephews, Gary DeShong and Ron Bly.
Friends and family will be received at the Boal Memorial Chapel, Barton, on Friday from 3 to 5 PM. The Barton American Legion will hold a memorial service at 5:00 PM at the Boal Chapel.
A funeral service will be conducted at 5:15 PM on Friday, with Rev. Thomas Morgan officiating.
Interment will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Moscow Mills, at a later date.
