Carl Wesley Arthur of Westernport went to be with his Lord and Savior on August 19, 2018.
Born on May 31, 1927, he was the youngest of 9 children to the late Samuel Russell and Nancy Jane (Shaffer) Arthur.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his sisters, Radia Arthur, Reba McDowell, Inez Ford Clark, Clara Etta Crowe Dye, Lucille M. Coop, Freda M. Thomas Steininger, Juanita F. Wilson and two brothers, Hollie Dale Arthur and a stillborn infant. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He is survived by his wife Edna Elizabeth Ruppert Arthur, many nieces and nephews and many grand and great grand nieces and nephews.
Carl was a WWII Navy Veteran. He entered into the Navy along with his sister Freda, a WWII Army Veteran. He trained in Bainbridge Gunnery School in Norfolk, VA. He went to the Armed Guard Center in Brooklyn, NY and boarded the first cargo ship SS John Powell. He was the number one gunner in Omaha Beach, France and Belgium.
He returned home in January 1945 to marry Edna Elizabeth Rupert and returned to the west coast by troop train to Seattle, WA, where he boarded his second ship, USA Transport hauling troops to Hawaii and Okinawa. He was discharged on November 27, 1945 and began working construction for Local 37 Operating Engineers and retired after 40 years of service, for which he continued to be a member.
He was a member of Bethel Pentecostal Holiness Church, Lonaconing. He was a lifetime member of the Ridgeley VFW; a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 41; and a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, Hagerstown.
Carl was a devoted and loving husband, brother and uncle. Although he had no children he had many nieces and nephews that he loved and treated like his own. With his nieces and nephews, he held bible studies in his home, took them on Sunday hikes, held campfires, hot dog roasts, played baseball games in the grove and most of all taught them to love the Lord.
Friends and family will be received at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport on Thursday, August 23rd from 12:30 to 2:00 pm. A funeral will be held following the visitation at 2:00 pm with Rev. George Loar officiating.
Interment will be in Philos Cemetery, Westernport.
