Monk was born on October 30, 1931, in Luke, MD, to the late Giacomo Camplesi and Louise (Chiccehitto) Camplesi. He graduated from Bruce High School in Westernport, MD, in 1950. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the aircraft carrier USS Tarawa in the B Division during the Korean War, traveling the world on its Mediterranean cruise. At the end of his service in 1954, he returned home to Western Maryland, where he was employed at Westvaco in Luke, MD, for forty-two years, retiring in 1997 as a machine tender.
He was a lifelong parishioner of St. Peter Catholic Church in Westernport, MD. Following retirement, Monk dedicated his time as a volunteer for the since shut St. Peter Catholic School where his children attended.
Monk was a lover of bowling, gardening, and cooking. Notably, he was the first person to bowl a perfect tenpin game at The Bowler in LaVale, MD in 1962, and his impressive tomato crops continuously garnered the attention of his neighbors and local newspapers. His meatballs, rigatoni, and braciole, recipes passed down from his father, were enjoyed by many in the community over the decades. During his later years, he especially valued time spent sitting in his front yard alongside his close friends.
